Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: How many people are on duty in the station per day?
A: 9. There are 5 people assigned to station 1 and 4 assigned to station 2. There is always a full time supervisor, 1 engine company, 1 truck company, and 2 ambulances staffed per day.
Q: Why do fire trucks follow ambulances? Isn’t that a waste of money?
A: The fire apparatus follows the ambulance to assist moving equipment and patients. Consider this. It takes more than 2 people to move a 300 lb. person with the weight of the equipment and stretcher included. It’s a decision that allows our paramedics to focus on the patient and leave the movement of equipment to someone else. The people coming on the fire truck are on duty and able to assist with carrying the patient and equipment and the patient is never left alone.
Q: Why do I see other towns responding into Hickory Hills and Justice?
A: Other towns respond to fire calls in our district (Hickory Hills, Justice, and unincorporated Cook County) as we do the same for them. It is impossible for any town or district to provide the number of firefighters required at an emergency scene on their own. The response is called automatic aid and is a nationally recognized means of neighbors helping neighbors to provide maximum service at minimum cost.
